Early Years in Rural KwaZulu-Natal Province
Mdladla was born into poverty in the rural village of Vukuzakhe in KwaZulu-Natal province. In spite of the difficult circumstances of his upbringing, he was determined to succeed academically. With the help of numerous scholarships, he was able to attend some of the best schools in South Africa before eventually graduating from the University of Natal with a degree in Political Science. It was during this time that he became involved in student politics and began to become more active politically.
The Anti-Apartheid Movement
After completing university, Mdladla joined forces with a number of prominent activists who were campaigning against apartheid policies. He soon became one of the most visible faces and voices within the anti-apartheid movement and was appointed as Executive Director for Anti-Apartheid Coalition (AAC). During this period he travelled extensively throughout South Africa speaking out against racism and inequality – even when it put him at risk from police brutality or worse. His commitment to social justice earned him a great deal of respect from those around him and helped pave the way for eventual democratic reform within South Africa.
A Successful Entrepreneurial Career After leaving AAC, Mdladla ventured into business by launching several successful companies including Media24 (a media company) and Alliance Capital Partners (an investment company). He also serves as Chairperson for Mvelaphanda Group (a major conglomerate) as well as various other corporate entities such as Anglo American plc., Transnet Ltd., Sanlam Ltd., SABMiller plc., among others.
