Early Life and Career Beginnings

Leon du Preez was born in Pretoria on April 21st, 1968. From a young age he was drawn to the world of entertainment. After studying at Van der Bijl High School, he moved to Johannesburg where he began pursuing his dream of becoming an actor. His first major role was playing Nathan in Egoli: Place Of Gold in 1992. Since then he has appeared in numerous movies and television shows including Isidingo (2002-2003), Backstage (2005-2006), Jacob’s Cross (2007-2008), Rhythm City (2010-2011), Muvhango (2014-2015) and Binnelanders (2017).

Music Career

In addition to acting, Leon du Preez is also a singer/songwriter who has released several albums throughout his career including Music from Africa Vol 1 & 2 (2000) featuring songs such as “Nkosi Sikelel’ IAfrika” and “Viva Mandela”, Music From Africa Vol 3 & 4 (2004) featuring songs such as “Can’t Stop Thinking About You” and “Uthando Lwami”, Moonlighting (2008) featuring songs such as “Take Me Home Country Roads” and “Let It Be Me”, Rock Of Ages (2012) featuring songs such as “Life On Mars?”and “Suspicious Minds” , and most recently Soul Of The Blues Vol 1&2(2019) which includes songs such as “The Thrill Is Gone” and “I Just Wanna Make Love To You”. His music is best described as a fusion of contemporary jazz/pop with traditional African sounds.

Personal Life

Leon du Preez lives in Johannesburg with his wife Andrea van Wyk who he married in 1993. Together they have two children; daughter Zara du Preez who is an actress best known for her roles in Isibaya(2013-2017), The River(2018-present)and Legacy(2020). His son Dylan Du Preez is currently studying film production at AFDA Cape Town Film school. When not working or spending time with family, Leon enjoys playing golf, reading books about history, philosophy, biographies about famous personalities etc.


Leon du Preez has had an incredibly successful career spanning over three decades across both television and music industries. His talent for acting has earned him many awards including four Golden Horn Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Egoli; Place Of Gold(1992-1995).
