Early Life and Education
Matshela was born in Mpumalanga, South Africa on June 5th, 1962. He attended high school at Lekaneng Secondary School in Mpumalanga where he graduated with honors. After high school he went on to pursue further education at various universities around the world including Oxford University in England and OR Tambo University in Johannesburg. He holds a Masters degree from Oxford University in Electrical Engineering as well as numerous other qualifications from institutions such as Wits Business School, Harvard Business School and Stellenbosch University.
Career Path
Matshela’s career path has been nothing short of remarkable. In 2005 he became managing director for Eskom, one of the largest electricity companies in Africa. In 2013 he was appointed CEO before being named chairman in 2016 following a restructuring plan put into place by Eskom’s board members. During his tenure as CEO, Matshela implemented several strategies that enabled Eskom to become more efficient and effective while also reducing costs significantly. Following his success at Eskom he was appointed by President Jacob Zuma to chair NERSA – an independent regulator responsible for regulating prices for electricity, gas, water and nuclear energy across South Africa – in 2017. He also serves on several boards including those for Liketh Investments Pty Ltd., I-Energy Solutions Pty Ltd., EPE Capital Partners LLC & Sunbird Energy (Pty) Ltd.
