Who is Msaki?

Msaki (real name Zinzi Mputi) is an Afro-Soul artist from East London, South Africa. She is best known for her captivating live performances, powerful lyrics and unique sound which blends traditional African rhythms with electronic beats. Her lyrics focus on social issues such as political oppression, gender equality, LGBTQ rights, racism and more.

Msaki’s career took off in 2016 when she released her debut EP ‘Zaziyo’ to critical acclaim. She went on to perform at major festivals including Rocking The Daisies, Oppikoppi and Ashburner Jazz Festival as well as supporting international acts like John Legend on their South African tours. In 2017 she was nominated for Best Newcomer at the SAMAs (South African Music Awards) and Best Live Act at the South African Hip Hop Awards.

In 2019 she released her much anticipated debut album – ‘Siyoshona’ – which translates to ‘we are listening’. The album was produced by award-winning producer Spoek Mathambo who had previously worked with artists such as Die Antwoord and Petite Noir. The standout tracks on the album include ‘Yalelanga’ featuring Zimbabwean artist Shingai Shoniwa (formerly of Noisettes) as well as ‘Uhambo’ ft Nakhane Toure which was featured on HBO’s hit show Euphoria starring Zendaya Coleman.  The album was well received by fans and critics alike and solidified Msaki’s place amongst the top artists coming out of South Africa today.
