Thomas Jeffrey Hanks has been an American actor and director. Known for his comedy and dramatic roles, he is one of America’s most iconic and beloved movie stars and is considered an icon by many. His films have made him a household name in movies as well as on stage.
Hanks began his acting career in television with several popular series such as “Cheers” Three’s Company.” He played a character known as “Tom Haverford” in several episodes of this sitcom. Other popular sitcoms in which he appeared are “Frasier,” “Seinfeld,” “Cheers,” “The Breakfast Club,” and “Friends.” The actor was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Comedy/ Musical Picture for “Good Morning, Vietnam.”
In addition to his many TV appearances, Hanks also made a name for himself in the theater. Hanks wrote and directed his first film, “Liar Liar,” starring himself and Meryl Streep. Another movie that featured him was “Million Dollar Baby.” Many of his films have been nominated for Academy Awards, including “Liar Liar,” “Good Night, and Good Luck,” and “Catch Me If You Can.” His most recent films include the upcoming “Hank and Deke”How Do You Know When You Have Made it Big.”
A native of Philadelphia, PA, Tom was raised in a family that supported both baseball and football. His early life was an active one; he attended Roosevelt High School and graduated in the top ten percent of his class. In his spare time, he played baseball and basketball. He also enjoyed swimming and golf. He was on the baseball and basketball team at Roosevelt.
After graduating from high school, Tom attended the University of Michigan, where he majored in drama. He eventually became a member of the “Wrecking Crew” and later served as a member of both the Delta Chi and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. While in college, Tom was also the first African American male model hired to work for an ad agency in New York City. His modeling career also took him to the fashion world as he posed for various magazines and photoshoots. He became the first African American male model to pose nude for a Playboy magazine.
In addition to acting, Tom has been a famous author of several books. He is the author of four children’s books; “A Fish Called Wanda,” “A Fish Called Wanda II,” “All I Really Need to Know about My Cat,” “An Adventure of Love and Death,” and “Hoop Dreams.” Most of his books have received great reviews, with “A Fish Called Wanda,” being praised for its thoughtful story and touching messages. A novel based on the life of author Michael Crichton was released in 2020 and was named one of the best books of 2020 by Booklist. Tom Hanks continues to be an active and prolific writer.
